A 12-string guitar sounds like two guitarists who never disagree — that huge, chiming shimmer behind “Hotel California,” “Wish You Were Here” and half of The Byrds’ catalog. The price of the shimmer is paid at tuning time: twelve strings, two different pitches inside most pairs, nearly double the tension of a 6-string, and one skinny octave string with a reputation for snapping. None of it is hard once you know the map. Here is the whole system, plus the two habits that keep those twelve strings from becoming a chore.
The map: octave pairs below, unisons on top
A 12-string is a normal guitar where every string has a twin, arranged in six courses you fret and strum as one. The trick is that the twins aren’t all identical:
- The four lower courses — E, A, D, G — pair the normal string with a much thinner partner tuned one octave higher. That octave gap is the entire 12-string sound.
- The top two courses — B and E — are plain unison pairs: two identical strings at the same pitch, adding sparkle and volume but no octave.
So standard tuning is still E–A–D–G–B–E, exactly as on a 6-string — you’re just tuning ten different pitches instead of six, and the octave numbers on your tuner’s display stop being optional reading.

In each octave pair, tune the main (thick) string first, then its thin octave twin. The G4 octave string is the highest-tension point on the instrument — approach it from below.
The routine that actually works
- Tune one string of a pair at a time, muting its twin with a spare fingertip. Two strings ringing an octave apart give a chromatic tuner two answers to choose from, and the needle will hop between them. One string, one clean reading.
- Main string first, then the octave twin. Work course by course from the 6th up: E2 then E3, A2 then A3, D3 then D4, G3 then G4, then the B and E unison pairs. Read the letter and the octave — on a 12-string, “it says E” is only a third of the information.
- Always approach from below. Tune slightly flat of the target, then come up to it. Rising to pitch leaves the string and tuning post settled against the pull of the string; dropping down to pitch leaves slack that works loose within a song. On an instrument with this much combined tension, the habit matters double.
- Then play each pair together and listen. A matched unison locks into a single fat note; a matched octave pair rings like one bright string. A slow wah-wah-wah pulse means the pair is a few cents apart — the same beats phenomenon used in ear tuning. Nudge one string until the wobble slows and stops.
- Full second pass. Twelve strings pulling on one neck means every string you tighten slightly detunes the others. The first pass gets you close; the second pass gets you in tune. Why so many players tune down a half step
Look up live footage of the great 12-string songs and you’ll notice many are not at concert pitch. Tuning everything down a semitone — E♭ standard, the second tab in the player above — is old 12-string wisdom, for three reasons: it removes a meaningful chunk of the roughly 40% extra tension the doubled strings put on the neck and top, it makes the stiff doubled courses noticeably easier to fret and bend, and vintage instruments in particular were often built expecting it. Slap a capo on the first fret and you’re back at concert pitch for playing with others. Microphone tips for a 12-string
- Pluck the single string you’re tuning, gently. A 12-string is loud, and its whole personality is sympathetic ringing — every string you don’t damp is adding its voice to what the microphone hears. Rest your strumming-hand palm across the courses you’re not tuning.
- The low E2 at 82 Hz is quiet on small laptop and phone mics; if the reading stumbles, pluck it a touch harder over the soundhole, or use its 12th-fret harmonic — the same trick bassists use for their even lower strings, covered in the bass tuning guide.
- Expect the whole job to take three to four minutes, not the one minute of a 6-string. That is normal, and it beats the alternative: a 12-string that is 90% in tune sounds worse than a 6-string that is 90% in tune, because every error comes with a twin.
Frequently asked questions
Which string of each pair comes first on the downstroke?
On most 12-strings the octave (thin) string sits above its main string, so a downstroke hits the high octave first — that attack is part of the classic jangle. Rickenbacker famously reverses this, putting the main string first. It changes the strum’s character, not the tuning: the pitches and the routine stay exactly the same.
Is it safe to keep a 12-string at concert pitch all the time?
A structurally healthy modern 12-string is built for E standard, so yes. On older or budget instruments, watch the warning signs of excess tension: a belly bulging behind the bridge, the action creeping higher season by season, or a bridge that looks like it is peeling up at the back edge. Any of those, and E♭ standard (or lighter strings) is cheap insurance. If the guitar will sit unplayed for months, letting the whole set down a half step costs nothing.
Can I tune a 12-string to Drop D or open tunings?
Yes, and open tunings sound enormous with octave courses — Open G and Open D are 12-string classics (Leadbelly lived in dropped 12-string tunings). Remember that whatever you do to a main string you do to its octave twin as well: Drop D on a 12-string means lowering both D-course strings… er, both 6th-course strings — E2→D2 and E3→D3. Keep the octave relationship intact and any 6-string tuning translates directly.
Do the pairs have to be perfectly matched, or is a little drift part of the sound?
Tune them as exactly as you can — within a couple of cents. The lush chorus effect people associate with 12-strings comes from the octave doubling and the tiny natural differences in how paired strings speak, not from deliberate mistuning.
