You tune carefully, play two songs, and it already sounds sour again. Before you blame the guitar — or your ears — know that tuning instability almost always comes from a short list of causes, and every one of them has a fix you can do at home or cheaply at a shop. Work through this list in order; it is sorted from most common to least.
1. New strings that haven’t stretched in
The symptom: the guitar goes flat — all strings, evenly — within minutes of tuning, especially in the first days after a string change.
Fresh strings are elastic. Under tension they keep stretching for hours of playing time, and every bit of stretch lowers the pitch. This is the single most common cause of “my guitar won’t stay in tune,” and it is completely normal.
The fix: stretch them in manually. Tune to pitch, then, one string at a time, hook a finger under the string near the 12th fret and pull it gently away from the fretboard a couple of centimeters, a few times along its length. Re-tune. Repeat the cycle three or four times until the string comes back to pitch after a pull. Two minutes of this saves days of drift.
2. Strings wound badly on the tuning posts
The symptom: a string drops suddenly in pitch — a little “clunk” down — rather than drifting smoothly, often after a bend or a hard strum.
Too many sloppy wraps, wraps that cross over each other, or too few wraps all leave slack stored on the post, waiting to release. The fix: rewind with two to four neat wraps descending down the post, each wrap seated below the previous one, with the string end locked under the first wrap. If a string was installed badly, it is genuinely worth the five minutes to redo it.
3. The nut is pinching the strings
The symptom: a “ping” or “tick” sound while tuning, strings that go sharp after big bends or vibrato, tuning that jumps in steps instead of moving smoothly.
The string passes through a slot in the nut on its way to the tuning peg. If that slot is too narrow or rough, the string binds: tension builds up on one side of the nut, then releases unpredictably while you play.
The fix: lubricate the slots. The classic home remedy is graphite from a soft pencil — “sharpen” the pencil into each slot during a string change. Purpose-made nut lubricant works even better. If a slot still pings after lubrication, a technician can widen and polish it in minutes; it is one of the cheapest repairs there is.
4. Temperature and humidity swings
The symptom: the guitar was in tune last night and is uniformly flat or sharp this morning; or it drifts during the first ten minutes of playing.
Wood breathes. Heat expands the neck and lowers pitch; cold does the opposite; humidity swells the wood over days. A guitar carried from a cold car into a warm room can be audibly out of tune by the time you sit down — and it will keep moving until it reaches room temperature.
The fix: you can’t fight physics, so manage it. Let the instrument acclimate for ten or fifteen minutes after a temperature change, then tune. Store it away from radiators, vents and direct sun. In very dry or very humid climates, a case humidifier keeps acoustic guitars stable (and prevents far worse problems than tuning drift).
5. Worn-out strings
The symptom: the guitar tunes fine, but chords still sound slightly off everywhere; the tuner needle wavers on a decaying note; intonation seems worse than it used to be. Old strings accumulate dirt, corrosion, and dents where they meet the frets. Their mass becomes uneven along their length, so they no longer vibrate in tune with themselves — no amount of tuning fixes that.
The fix: new strings. As a rough guide, a daily player benefits from fresh strings every one to three months; rusty, discolored or dented strings are overdue. Wiping strings down after playing meaningfully extends their life.
6. Loose or worn tuning machines
The symptom: you can wiggle a tuner button, hear rattles, or a peg turns with no immediate change in pitch (backlash).
The fix: most tuners have a small screw on the button and a nut where the post passes through the headstock — snug them gently (do not crank). Cheap or worn-out machines with genuine internal play are inexpensive to replace, and modern sealed tuners are an easy upgrade on most guitars.
7. Tremolo bridges and heavy technique
The symptom (electric guitars): tuning goes off after using the whammy bar, or after aggressive bends — usually sharp on some strings and flat on others.
A floating tremolo balances string tension against springs; every dive changes where the strings sit at the nut and saddles. Fixes: lubricate the nut (see #3), stretch strings thoroughly (see #1), have the tremolo set up properly, and after using the bar, a gentle flutter of the bar helps everything re-seat. If you never use the bar, blocking the tremolo or adding springs makes tuning dramatically more stable.
Also worth an honest check: pressing too hard when fretting, especially on tall frets or with a heavy capo, bends every note sharp. If open strings read perfectly on the tuner but chords sound off, try a lighter touch before blaming the instrument.
8. Intonation — in tune open, out of tune up the neck
The symptom: open strings are perfect, but the same strings read sharp or flat when fretted at the 12th fret, and chords high on the neck sound sour.
This is not tuning drift — it is string length. Each string’s vibrating length must be matched to its scale so that fretting doesn’t bend it out of proportion. The check: with a chromatic tuner, compare each string’s 12th-fret harmonic to its 12th-fret fretted note. They should read identical. If the fretted note is sharp, the string needs to be slightly longer (saddle back); if flat, shorter. On electric guitars the saddles adjust with a screwdriver; on acoustics this is a job for a technician.
A five-minute diagnostic routine
- Tune precisely with a chromatic tuner, approaching each note from below.
- Stretch each string firmly and re-check: big drops? → strings need stretching in (#1).
- Listen while tuning: pings or jumps? → nut binding (#3). Sudden clunks under bends? → post winding (#2).
- Play hard for two minutes, re-check the tuner: sharp after bends? → nut or tremolo (#3, #7).
- Compare 12th-fret harmonic vs. fretted note on each string: mismatch? → intonation (#8).
- Strings older than ~3 months of playing? → replace and repeat the checklist (#5).
Frequently asked questions
Why does only my G string keep going out of tune?
On electric guitars, the G is the classic victim of nut binding: it is the thickest plain (unwound) string and takes a sharp angle to its tuning post on many headstocks. Does a capo make a guitar go out of tune?
