How to read your voice on a tuner

Sing an open “ah” at a comfortable volume and hold it. Within a moment the dial names the note you are producing, its octave, and how many cents you sit above or below it. That is the whole interaction — but a voice behaves differently from a string, and two things are worth knowing before you judge the numbers.

First, sing without vibrato while you measure. Vibrato is a deliberate oscillation in pitch, often ±30 cents or more, and the needle will swing with it. That is the tuner working correctly, not a fault — but for a clean reading, hold a straight tone.

Second, give each note a moment to settle. Voices slide into pitch far more than a plucked string does. Read the number after the note has steadied, not during the approach.

Finding your vocal range

  1. Warm up first. A cold voice will under-report your range at both ends, sometimes badly. Hum gently through a comfortable middle octave for a few minutes before you measure anything.
  2. Start in the middle and walk down. Sing a comfortable note, check what it reads, then step down semitone by semitone. Your lowest note is the last one that still produces a clear, steady pitch the tuner can lock onto — not the lowest noise you can make.
  3. Return to the middle and walk up. Same rule at the top: the highest note you can hold cleanly, not the highest you can squeak. Stop the moment it hurts or feels forced.
  4. Write down both notes with their octave numbers.“G2 to E4” is a complete, useful description of a voice. “About two octaves” is not.

Treat these as rough neighbourhoods rather than verdicts. Real classification depends on where your voice sounds best and shifts register, not merely on the extremes you can reach — plenty of tenors can produce notes well below C3 without being baritones.

Practising pitch accuracy

The tuner turns a vague sense of “that sounded off” into a number, which is what makes it useful for practice. Play a reference tone above, sing it back, and look at the cents. Within about 10 cents is solidly in tune to a listener; beyond 20 cents most people will notice. For bending notes deliberately — sliding into or away from a pitch for expression — the same readout tells you how far you are actually travelling. Sing a note, bend it as you would in a phrase, and watch the cents. Most singers are surprised by how large their bends really are.

Finding a song’s starting note

Play a recording near the microphone and the dial names what it hears. On a sparse intro — a solo voice, a single guitar, a piano line — this reliably gives you the starting note, and from there the key is usually obvious. It works far less well on a dense mix, where several instruments sound at once and the tuner has to pick a fundamental out of the pile. For that, pick the quietest, most exposed moment in the track.

What note am I singing?

Hold the note without vibrato for the cleanest reading. It works for humming and whistling too; whistling in particular gives a very clean signal because it is close to a pure tone.

Why does the needle keep moving while I sing one note?

Because your voice is moving. Vibrato swings pitch by design, often ±30 cents or more at a few oscillations per second, and even a straight tone drifts more than a string does. Judge the settled average rather than the flicker. If you want a still needle, sing quietly with no vibrato and support the breath steadily.

Can I use this to check if I sing in tune?

Yes, and it is one of the fastest ways to improve. Play a reference tone, sing it back, and read the cents — within about 10 cents is in tune by any normal standard. What makes this valuable is that it catches consistent bias, like landing flat on every ascending leap, which is nearly impossible to notice from inside your own head.

Does this work for instruments as well as voices?
